Ryan Harrison | The Golden Bat |
Ryan Harrison (born May 7, 1992) is an American professional tennis player. Harrison has won one career ATP title in singles at the 2017 Memphis Open to go along with four in doubles, including the 2017 French Open. As of June 2018, he is the 7th-highest ranked American in men's singles.
Before turning 16, Harrison was regarded a prodigy after cracking the top 10 in the junior rankings and becoming one of the youngest players ever to win an ATP match. Although he broke through onto the ATP level by the age of 20, Harrison then fell out of the top 100 for several years. He since returned to the top 100 in 2016 after a strong second half of the season that included multiple wins over opponents ranked in the top 20 and his first career appearance in the round of 32 at a Grand Slam. Harrison built on that momentum in 2017 to reach a new career high ranking in singles after playing in his first two finals at the ATP level and winning his first career ATP title.
Harrison won his first match at the Australian Open over Frenchman Nicolas Mahut 6–3, 6–4, 6–2, marking the first time he made the second round at the tournament since 2013.[12] He then fell in straight sets to Tomáš Berdych.
During competition in the 2017 New York Open, Harrison was charged by competitor Donald Young with making racist comments during their match. Harrison, who has a reputation in the profession for vocal aggression and abrasiveness, often incurring criticism from opponents and tournament officials. repeatedly denied that he had made a racial comment towards Young during their first-round match, and after a brief investigation, the Association of Tennis Professionals found no evidence that racist comments had been made.[13][14]
Harrison reached the final of the RBC Tennis Championships of Dallas and defeated Taylor Fritz in straight sets, winning his fourth Challenger title.[15] In his next tournament, Harrison followed up on that success by reaching both the singles and doubles finals at the Memphis Open. This was his first singles final, having lost in the semifinals on seven previous occasions. Although he would lose the doubles final with Steve Johnson, Harrison defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili in the singles final to win his first career title. Between his back-to-back titles at the RBC Tennis Championships of Dallas and the Memphis Open, he did not drop a set at either tournament.
At the French Open, Harrison teamed with Michael Venus to win the men's doubles title.
In July, Harrison reached the final of the Atlanta Open, losing to John Isner.
Chung Hyeon
Chung Hyeon (Hangul: 정현; Hanja: 鄭泫; Korean pronunciation: [tɕəːŋ hjʌn];[1] born 19 May 1996) is a South Korean professional tennis player.[2] He is currently the highest ranked South Korean and also the reigning Next Gen Finals champion. As an unseeded player, he became the first Korean player to reach a Grand Slam semifinal at the 2018 Australian Open.
Chung picked up his first big result of the year by reaching the quarterfinals of the Auckland Open, recording a win over John Isner in the second round.
At the Australian Open, Chung made his breakthrough into the limelight by becoming the first South Korean player, male or female, to advance past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament. In the third round, he achieved his first victory over a Top 10 player, defeating world No. 4 Alexander Zverev in five sets.[16] In the next round, Chung won a straight sets match against six-time Australian Open champion and former world number one Novak Djokovic, who had just returned from injury.[17] This marked the first time since 2007 that Djokovic had lost in straight sets at the Australian Open.[18] In the quarterfinals, Chung defeated unseeded American Tennys Sandgren to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal. He became the youngest Australian Open semifinalist since Marin Čilić in 2010 and the lowest ranked since then-No. 86 Marat Safin in 2004.[19] Chung played Roger Federer in the semi-final, but withdrew due to foot blisters when he was close to going two sets down.[20] The Korean also played the doubles event with Radu Albot and defeated the defending champions Henri Kontinen and John Peers.
Following the Australian Open, Chung went on to compete in the Delray Beach Open, where he defeated Cameron Norrie and Franko Škugor before bowing out to eventual winner Frances Tiafoe. He then played in the Mexican Open, where he defeated Donald Young and Ernesto Escobedo before losing to Kevin Anderson in straight sets.
At the Indian Wells, Chung beat Dušan Lajović, Tomas Berdych, Pablo Cuevas to advance to his maiden Masters quarterfinals appearance, but lost to Roger Federer in straight sets. At Miami, Chung defeated Roberto Bautista Agut, Michael Mmoh, and João Sousa, reaching the quarterfinals where he lost in straight sets to John Isner, who went on to win the tournament. He did not compete at the 2018 French Open or 2018 Wimbledon Championships
